Glossary

Binding

Decorative trim (edging or piping) applied to the fold-down portion of a flat sheet or pillowcase.

Comforter

A type of quilt, usually thick and rectangular, also referred to as a duvet. It is filled with natural (such as down) or synthetic (such as polyester) insulation material.

Comforter Cover

A large fabric cover with a flap, button, or zipper closure that protects your comforter. Also referred to as a duvet cover.

Cuff

A contrasting band or border at the edge of a pillowcase or top sheet.

Duvet

A thick quilt, also known as a comforter or duvet insert, filled with natural or synthetic insulation. A duvet is used with a removable protective cover called a duvet cover.

Duvet Cover

A removable, washable fabric case with a flap, button, or zipper closure. It protects the duvet insert in the same way a pillowcase protects a pillow.

Duvet Cover Set

A set containing one duvet cover and one or two pillowcases. Duvet and pillow inserts are not included.

Housewife Pillowcase

A standard pillowcase style with an opening on one side. Our versions include an inner flap to keep the pillow securely in place.

Oxford Pillowcase

A pillowcase with a decorative flange of approximately 5 cm (about 2 inches) on three or four sides, creating a more luxurious look.

Cuffed Flat Sheet

A flat sheet finished with a decorative or contrasting cuff or border.

European Pillowcase

A large square pillowcase measuring 26" x 26" (65 x 65 cm), commonly called a “Euro.” Often placed behind standard pillows for added support and decoration.

Fitted Sheet

A bottom sheet with elastic edges designed to fit securely over a mattress. High-quality fitted sheets feature elastic all the way around.

Flange

A decorative band of fabric, typically about 3 inches wide, extending from the edge of a pillowcase or pillow sham to create a tailored appearance.

Flat Sheet

A top sheet that is usually tucked around the mattress at the sides and bottom. It may also be used as a bottom sheet in some bedding styles.

Hem

The finished edge of a piece of fabric, such as a plain flat sheet.

King Pillow

A larger pillow size, approximately 20" x 36".

Mattress Pad

A padded layer placed on top of the mattress to provide additional cushioning and protection.

Mattress Protector

A protective layer placed over the mattress and underneath the fitted sheet. When ordering fitted sheets, be sure to account for the added thickness of any mattress pad or topper.

Percale

A crisp, densely woven fabric with a thread count of at least 180. Percale refers to the weave, not the fiber content, and is known for its breathable, high-quality feel.

Pillow Protector

A removable protective cover placed underneath a pillowcase. Usually made from durable fabric and often zippered, it protects pillows from dust, dirt, and body oils.

Pillowcase

A removable pillow cover with an opening and inner flap to keep the pillow in place. Our pillowcases feature decorative stitching around the opening, and children’s sizes include a contrasting border.

Pillow Sham

A decorative pillow cover with a rear opening, often featuring ruffles or flanges. Shams are typically used as accent pillows.

Piping

A narrow decorative trim made of folded fabric, sometimes with a corded center, used to accent seams or edges.

Sheet Set

A coordinated set consisting of one fitted sheet, one flat sheet, and one or two pillowcases.

Shrinkage

The natural contraction of fabric after washing and drying. Bedding made from natural fibers may shrink approximately 2–6%, which is why items are initially cut slightly oversized.

Swatch

A small sample piece of fabric.

Thread Count

The number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric. Fabric softness depends more on fiber quality than thread count alone; a 200-thread-count fabric may feel softer than a tightly woven 500-thread-count fabric.
