Measuring Guide for Tablecloths
Whether you’re having friends round for dinner or planning a casual get-together with a few friends, a tablecloth is the perfect backdrop for the occasion. As a primer for your table, it sets not only the mood but the tone of the meal as well.
If you find yourself shopping for tablecloths, it could be very confusing. You’ll find tablecloths in a range of colours, prints, styles, shapes, and tablecloth sizes.
We thought we’d help out potential customers and make the whole process pain-free. Keep reading for some tips on choosing a tablecloth and how to calculate the size of tablecloth you need.
What Are Standard Tablecloth Sizes?

What Size Tablecloth Do I Need?
You should measure the entire width and length of your table, from end to end, regardless of whether your table is rectangular or square.
If you have a round table, measure the table’s diameter from one edge to the other, making sure you pass through the centre.
The length a tablecloth hangs down below the edge of your table is known as the drop length. Ideally, it should be no further than the diners’ laps. However, more formal dining tablecloths have been known to reach all the way to the ground. This is also a good idea if you want to hide some particularly ugly table legs.
A good tip to help you visualise the drop length you prefer is to hold a piece of paper or fabric hanging down from the table’s edge. Place your chairs and other nearby furniture objects where they’ll be during the occasion.
When making your calculations, you don’t need to worry about shrinkage. Here at Custom Bedding, we make allowances for that. Shrinkage is to be expected with washed linen, but it’s usually no more than 2–5% upon initial washing and drying cycles. We allow for such shrinkage by cutting the fabric a little larger.
What size tablecloth for a 6ft table?
The total size of your table is 72" x 72" and the desired drop is 10":
Total width: 72" + 10" + 10" = 92"
Total length: 72" + 10" + 10" = 92"
When you place your order, simply enter the required tablecloth size: 92" x 92".
When we manufacture the tablecloth, we cut the fabric slightly larger (by 2–5%) so that it shrinks to the correct size after the first wash.
How to Measure Round Tablecloth Sizes
- Follow these easy steps to calculate your round tablecloth sizes:
- Step 1: Measure the diameter of the table (the length across the table).
- Step 2: Decide what drop length you want.
- Step 3: Take your desired drop and multiply it by two (for each end of the tablecloth).
- Step 4: Add that amount (drop length x two) to the table’s diameter.
What size tablecloth do I need for a 60-inch round table, for example?
If the table has a 60" diameter and you want a 10" drop, the circular tablecloth should measure 80" (60" diameter + 20" total drop).
Measuring for Oval, Square and Rectangular Tablecloth Sizes
If you’ve got a square, rectangular, oblong, or oval table, the following steps will help you calculate the correct size.
- Step 1: Measure the length and width of your table.
- Step 2: Decide what length of drop you require.
- Step 3: Take your chosen drop and multiply it by two (for each end of the tablecloth).
- Step 4: Add the amount of drop (drop length x two) to the length and width of the table.
What size tablecloth for an 8 foot table?
If the table is 96" square and you want a 12" drop, your tablecloth should measure 120" x 120".
